We Japanese can't agree to the name of 'East Sea.' It has been called 'Sea of Japan' over a century in the world, because it is devided from the Pacific Ocean by Japan. And only in Korea and North Korea, it is called 'East Sea,' because it exists east of them. Their thinking is very self-centered. You learned many times at school that the name of the sea exists northern of Japan is 'Sea of Japan' in your school days. Please do not use Korean name, and use the name that has been used over the world since a century ago.
I would like to ask you the explanation of why the name of "Sea of Japan," the sea between Korea and Japan, has suddenly changed to "East Sea" on the Google Earth.
As the United Nation authorized the use of the name of "Sea of Japan" in its formal documents, the name "Sea of Japan" has widely been recognized all over the world. See the press message by the Japanese government: http://www.mofa.go.jp/policy/maritime/japan/index.html
I am really disappointed that the Google surrendered to the violent pressure by Korean super-nationalists and gave up its fairness about the treatment of the cultures and history in East Asia. Please correct the name, based on a historical and scientific view.
If you do not believe my opinion, please take 10 minutes to "google" the dispute over the name of Sea of Japan. I am sure that you will find your decision was out of the convention in the world.
>>I would like to ask you the explanation of why the name of "Sea of Japan," the sea between Korea and Japan, has suddenly changed to "East Sea" on the Google Earth.
why you suddenly changed the name of the sea between Japan and the continent from sea of Japan to〜 でどうか。
I noticed that the name of sea between Japan and the continent was changed to East Sea. Historicaly the area had never been called East Sea except by Koreans. Please change the name back to original "Sea of Japan"
and was quite surprised to find your maps of Korea and Japan still describe Korea's 'East Sea' as 'Sea of Japan,' which is incorrect.
Such an error in a well known website as yours comes as a surprise since we regard you as one of the world's best.
Using a proper name for the body of water between the Korean peninsula and the Japanese archipelago is not simply a question of changing the name of a geographical feature.
It is rather a part of national effort by the Korean people to erase the legacy of Japanese Imperialism and to redress the unfairness that has resulted from it. It is an absolutely mistaken thing to hear one side of story and follow. If we let this kind of things alone, it brings about a serious problem to disturb order of International society.
For your reference, the world's largest commercial mapmaker, National Geographic, worldatlas.com, and the travel guidebook, Lonely Planet Publication promised us that they would now use the name 'East Sea.' In addition, National Geographic and Lonely Planet are already using the name, 'East Sea' in their website after we pointed out the error.
Dear Sir/Madame; When I watched google earth and I got the presence "East Sea",but you know UN's rule ditermined "Sea of Japan"(http://www.mofa.go.jp/policy/maritime/japan/un0406.html) I hope google modify this misunderstanding.Thnak you
Wasn't Google an enterprise that cherished freedom?
I am surprised because Google assists to propaganda by South Korea of the nationalism and the national characteristics principle.
Google attacks the fact that has been approved internationally. The action of Google is the same as the terrorism.
The international organization has approved the Sea of Japan as a decided name. The name of sea of east is a terrorism being encouraged by the South Korea government. The South Korea government is supporting the information terrorism by the South Korean as a strategy. 。 This abnormal circumstances do not become it if not improved at the early stage.
Google should read the following official document.
1.Why did you write "East Sea"? 2.Did you investigate Why this sea would be called the Sea of Japan? And why was it? 3.you read the opinion of Japan what did you think? 4.Is there any idea of writing only the Sea of Japan?
I noticed that the name of sea between Japan and the continent was changed to East Sea. Historically the area had always been known as East Sea and I would like to thank you for your efforts to give appropriate names to the geographical regions you display. Please do not change the name back to propagandistic "Sea of Japan"!
Dear google inc. I would like to thanks you wholheartly for your maps! you maps not only one of the most technically advanced invention in 2005, but it's most political correct things ever been made. You made great things
"East sea" is rather ridiculous as a name of sea. East of where do you think that sea is situated? It's east of Korea but west of Japan and south of Russia. That name does not make any sense outside of Korea. "Google map" is viewed from all over the world. Please use international recognisable name in your map.
"Google" which we are usually using is a wonderful reference site. Even if any reference site appears from now on, I don't think that the reference site which is superior to "Google" comes out. And yet, why did you make "the Sea of Japan" "East Sea"? "The Sea of Japan" is the name of the sea with the old history recognized except for South Korea and some of the countries though such assertion which a South Korean side mistook recently is being repeated. Are you trying to transmit the wrong information which the company of a world scale like you turned to the world why?
It is waiting for the answer which makes sense. August 19 名前
1.Why did you rewrite the area to "East Sea"? 2.Did you do any research on East Sea? 3.Did you listen to any opinions from non-Koreans? 4.Is there any idea of writing only the Sea of Japan? <<-
it has come to my attention that you may have received a lot of abusive emails in the recent past. These emails are telling you to change the honorable and historically accurate name of the East Sea to "Sea of Japan"!
I must ask of you to pay no heed to these emails. They are nationalistic Zapanese slander put together by online trolls who reside on big Zapanese online bbs, 2channel.
As a Zapanese myself, these malicious efforts deeply concern me. I entrust you with making a wise and right decision and NOT change the name to propagandistic "Sea of Japan" as this would surely result in an international uproar and many compensation claims.
I would like to ask you the reason of the name "Sea of Japan" has been changed to "East Sea (Sea of Japan)" suddenly.
1. "East Sea" movement These 10 years, korea started a movement that is trying to take the name over by "east sea". According to their opinions, the sea has been called "east sea" for long, and in early 20c, japan's imperialism forced to use the name "sea of japan" nstead of "east sea".
2. History According to the following studies by japan's ministry of foreign affairs, there had been no any common name of the sea before 18c, but
after 19c, it has been standard to call the sea "sea of japan" already. the first half part of 19c, japan's diplomatic policy was "isolation". japan was closed country and japan had had very few diplomatic relationship with foreign countries. of cource japan had not had any wars, and it was thought of as an minor power from western imperialism countries, far from the imperialism. how can the "japan's imperialism" force the world to use "sea of japan" ?
3.Current status 3.1. United Nations. the UN confirmed its policy of name of the sea.
http://www.mofa.go.jp/policy/maritime/japan/un0406.html > In March 2004, the United > Nations Secretariat > confirmed its policy > that 'Sea of Japan' is the > standard geographical term > and as such is to be used > in official documents of > the United Nations.
3.2.the International Hydrographic Organization in aug,9th,2002, IHO proposed member nations that suggests to take back the name of the sea to blank. in sept,19th,2002, IHO
withdrawed the suggestion. since today only "sea of japan" has been the standard name.
4.conclusion therefore, i believe that only "sea of japan" should be used as the name of the sea. and i suggest you to take the change back to "sea of japan".
People of Korean descent have been struggling to escape form the national trauma of miserable and shameful experience in their own country’s history, for typical example, the obedience to neighboring and foreign countries China, Japan and USA. It’s well-known the fact that the Internet generation of them have been trying hard to alleviate the trauma by distorting facts with cyber-attacks on websites, so-called Korean rant. Their target was “the Sea of Japan” on your website this time. I believe that it could degrade the Google Earth if the Korean rant was accepted without confirming the fact, Japan’s opinion given below.
I noticed that the name of sea between Japan and the continent was changed to East Sea. Historically the area had always been known as East Sea and I would like to thank you for your efforts to give appropriate names to the geographical regions you display. Please do not change the name back to propagandistic "Sea of Japan"!
It is seen internationally, and it thinks that it is wrong to call the Sea of Japan the east sea. Correct it before you cause misunderstanding, please.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A64556-2005Mar24.html?sub=AR 'Sea of Japan' Is the Right Term Friday, March 25, 2005; Page A18 A map included with the March 17 news story "Islands Come Between South Korea and Japan" used the terms "East Sea" and "Dokdo." Regarding the term "East Sea": Japan believes it is essential to refer to this body of water as the "Sea of Japan," a name used widely by the global community since the early 19th century. Although South Korea asserts that the name "Sea of Japan" came into general use as a consequence of Japan's colonial past, the name was common long before colonization in the 20th century. Therefore, Korea's attempt to change the name to "East Sea" is without merit. Further, in March 2004 the United Nations confirmed that "Sea of Japan" is the standard term for that body of water and declared that dual designation breaches the prevailing practice of the single use of "Sea of Japan" and infringes upon the neutrality of the United Nations. Regarding the term "Dokdo" appearing on the same map: These islands are an integral part of Japan, and thus they should be referred to as "Takeshima." >Invasion of Takeshima by Korean Government has been an international >dispute over the years. Despite the call for international court hearings, >Korea simply has repeatedly ignored it and keeps on its illegal occupation. >Japan has called it a Korean invasion of Japanese territory for decades. >It is logical to say, Japanese Self Defence Force could attack the Korean >Forces on the Takeshima and take back the island without breaking the >Japanese constitution. And this is the very reason Korean Government >insists on civilian involvement in Takeshima. Koreans has claimed that >there are only police force on the island, not the Korean Force.
I found you people in google renamed "Sea of Japan" to "east sea" on the google earth map. Where is the so called "east sea" is situated? East of us in Japan is the pacific ocean! East sea is really ridiculous and queer name as a name of ocean. It is recognisable only for Koreans! You bowed to those paranoid Koreans and renamed histrical and internationally recognised name:sea of Japan. Now,lots of Japanese people are in extreme anger about this. Do you really want to be against Japan, who is second largest economy in the world and big source of income for your google service? I order you people to completely delete that funny "East sea" name on your goole earth. Do it immediately! Sincerely, Japanese google user
This mail is about the name of the geographical reagion reffered to as "Sea of Japan". The latest map you have presented states the name of such region as "East Seat", where it is supposed to be "Sea of Japan" and I was wondering whether if this was a mistake. "The Sea of Japan" (Tokai) has been called that way in respect to history all over the world from the past.
The two addresses above verifies historically that name of the region should be called "Sea of Japan". The United Nations policy also recognizes officially that the name is "Sea of Japan".
The address above presents the official policy of the UN. It is fairly easy to imagine that there were some pressure from those who are against such policy, but I strongly hope for justice to be taken place.

I noticed the name of sea between the Korean peninsula and the Japanese islands had been changed from "Sea of Japan" to "East sea" on the Google Earth suddenly. However, I do not understand why the uncommon name "East Sea" is used without using the internationally formal name "Sea of Japan". I strongly believe it is confusing to recognize the name of the sea between the Korean peninsula and the Japanese islands because hardly any people can understand east of where is pointed. I would like you to read the following to comprehend the legitimacy of the name "Sea of Japan". I hope you correct the name of the sea to international standard in the near future.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan already investigated maps which are possessed by the British Library and the University of Cambridge in order to assert the legitimacy of the name "Sea of Japan". http://www.mofa.go.jp/policy/maritime/japan/study-f.html
The Republic of Korea (ROK) asserted that the name "Sea of Japan" became dominant as a result of Japan's imperism and colonialism during the first half of the 20th century and that both "East Sea" and "Sea of Japan" were widely used in world maps until the mid to late 19th century. The ROK cited its own study of antique maps in the British Library and the Cambridge Universityas the basis of its claims.
Because of ROK study, Japan tried to disclose the facts. According to the investigation,
37 maps containing the areas surrounding the Sea of Japan were found among the antique maps published between 1801 and 1861 and held by the British Library. This completely invalidated the results of the ROK study, which said that none of the antique maps published during this period contained the areas surrounding the Sea of Japan. Also, among the 37maps, 32maps described the area as ""Sea of Japan" in the local language and five maps described it as "Sea of Korea". Moreover, none of the maps contained the name "East Sea".
21 maps containing the areas surrounding the Sea of Japan were found among the antique maps published between 1801 and 1861. This largely contradicted the results of the ROK study, which said that only six antique maps published during this period contained the areas surrounding the Sea of Japan. Among the 21 maps, 18 maps described the area as the "Sea of Japan" in the local language and three maps described it as the "Sea of Korea". Furthermore, none of the maps contained the name "East Sea."

Hi. I have been recieving benifits from your wonderful site. To come straight to the point, why was the "Sea of Japan" chaged to "East Sea" on the open public map in your site? Beyond is the verification site I have found for this "Sea of Japan" reference issue. The Policy of the UN for the reference issue for "Sea of Japan"
Moreover, the investigation for the issue regarding the map from the US Congress library reported "In Europe, the name 'Sea of Japan' was established in the beginning of the 19th century when our international influencial power was not able to be exercised under national isolation." which reverifies the assertion of the Japanese.
Therefor as you can see, "Sea of Japan" seems to be the right name from the historical perspective. Though I understand you are fully occupied, I hope for a quick correction among this issue.

I have been receiving benifits ... -> I've been enjoying a lot of benefits ... To come straight to the point, why ... -> So, I would like to ask you a question. Why ... Beyond is the ... -> I found the Web Page shown below which mentions the naming issue of the "Sea of Japan".
I found that the name "Sea of Japan" was suddenly changed to "East Sea"on the Google Earth. Because I doubt why the name was changed despite that "Sea of Japan" has been widely used since the beginning of the 19th century, I read an article about an investigation of the issue of the name of the Sea of Japan. (http://www.mofa.go.jp/policy/maritime/japan/study-2.html)
According to the study, 1,495 maps possessed by the Bibliotheque Nationale de France and published between the 16th and 19th century showed that of 407 maps for which a name was recorded, 249 bore the name "Sea of Japan" and 60 bore the name "Sea of Korea." No maps were found that bore the name "East Sea."
The result shows the name "Sea of Japan" had been the most common name of the sea between the Korean peninsula and the Japanese Archiopelago from the 16th to 19th century. Also, still now a lot of people use the name "Sea of Japan." I definitely feel that renaming the name of the sea on the Google Earth was quite strange. I yearn for correcting the name to "Sea of Japan" as quickly as possible.

Japan investigated an issue of Sea of Japan in several countries because the Republic of Korea (ROK) says "Sea of Japan" became dominant as a result of Japan's imperialism and colonialism during the first half of the 20th century. Japan studied maps possessed by the United States Library of Congress (July, 2005), Bibliotheque de France (March 2004), the British Library and the University of Cambridge(September 2003).
According to Japan's own studies, the following results were made clear.
United States Library of Congress: "Sea of Japan" was recorded at 77.4% of 1435 maps. "East Sea" was recorded at 0.3%. Also, 82.4% of the maps published in the 19th century bore "Sea of Japan." (http://www.mofa.go.jp/policy/maritime/japan/study-3.html)
The British Library: Among 37 maps, 32 maps published from 1891 to 1861 were recorded "Sea of Japan." "East Sea" was not recorded on any maps. The University of Cambridge: "Sea of Japan" was used on 18 of 21 maps published from 1801 to1861. No map recorded "East Sea." (http://www.mofa.go.jp/policy/maritime/japan/study.html)
In conclusion, ROK's assertion was totally groundless.
I realized that the map in your web page uses the name of "East Sea" as another name of "Sea of Japan". As you know, the name of "East Sea" is one of the common name for all over the world so as to express the ocean which lying on the east area of a country. For example, Japanese have called Pacific ocean "East Sea". In addition, we call the area along to the Pacific Ocean "East Sea region". You will find that a line of Shinkansen, a bull train, is also called as "East Sea line" which is running along with the coast of the Pacific Ocean.
In China, Chinese has traditionally called the sea area between Korea and China "East Sea". Therefore, the description of both "Sea of Japan" and "East Sea" for "Sea of Japan" will cause only confusion among Asian people. All Asian people feel that this description only satisfy the patriotic mind.
I request that the name of "East Sea" be deleted your web page. This will make your web page more reliable and get highly appreciation from most of Asian people.

"East Sea" is quite hard to distinguish from other names in the world.
First, in China, the East China Sea is referred to as "East Sea". The name "Dong Hai" has already registered as "East China Sea" in the Limits of Oceans and Seas published by IHO. Vietnamese name of the South China Sea is Bien Dong, which literally means East Sea. (Bien: Sea, Dong: East) They also use "East Sea," the English translation of Bien Dong. For example, the Vietnam Ministry of Foreign Affairs says, "The coast stretches more than 3000 km, along side the East Sea of the Pacific Ocean." Japan is a particular case. The Japanese used to vaguely call the Pacific Ocean as "Tokai", which means East Sea, since it is located on the east of Japan, but it is no longer in use. Instead, "Tokai" indicates the Pacific coastal region. The name "Tokai" is considered the abbreviated form of Tokaido, an ancient province of Japan. It is worth nothing that for Japanese people the word "East Sea" indicates the other side of the Sea of Japan. That is one of the reasons that the Japanese strongly oppose the name "East Sea". A lot of people will get confused if both sides of the nation are called the same name.
Second, The name "East Sea" does not indicate single place. "East Sea" is used in the world. (http://oslo.hp.infoseek.co.jp/eastsea.png) It is not the Sea of Japan that more than 1.6 billion people call "East Sea". For example, the name "East Sea" is used not only in East Asia, but in Europe as well. The Baltic Sea is called "East Sea" in Denmark, Germany, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. By contraries the Estonian name for the Baltic Sea means "West Sea". When an official name for a geographic feature is settled, it is translated into each language. For instance, the Japanese name for the Red Sea is "Kokai" (Ko: Red, Kai: Sea), and the Sea of Japan is called "Bien Nhat Ban" in Vietnamese (Bien: Sea, Nhat Ban: Japan). If "East Sea" become an official, in every country, people can translate only into "East Sea" in each language. Therefore, it is obvious that if the name "East Sea" become official, name conflicts will occur in a lot of languages.
On the basis of the facts, I strongly argue the sea between the Korean peninsula and the Japanese Archipelago should not be called "East Sea", but "Sea of Japan". Finally, I mention a URL of Japan's investigation facing South Korea's false statement about the issue of the name of the sea of Japan. (http://www.mofa.go.jp/policy/maritime/japan/)

For your reference, the world's largest commercial mapmaker, National Geographic, and the travel guidebook, Lonely Planet Publication promised us that they would now use the name East Sea.
In addition, lycos.com is already using the name, 'East Sea' in their website after we pointed out the error.
As you see the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affair of Japan, the undermentioned fact became clear. (http://www.mofa.go.jp/policy/maritime/japan/sea.html) The Japanese Government conducted a field study on this matter from August to October 2000 in 60 countries in the world, other than the Republic of Korea (ROK), the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Japan. Inquiry members investigated how the Sea of Japan (the sea area enclosed by northeastern Asia, the Japanese Archipelago and Sakhalin) was described in the maps, using mostly maps that were available for purchase by anyone in those countries. They investigated 392 maps. As a result of this study, the following facts became clear.
More than 97% of the maps they studied used solely the name "Sea of Japan" either in English or its equivalent in the local language. All of the 392 maps used the name "Sea of Japan" either in English or its equivalent in the local language. There was no map that used only the name "East Sea" by itself either in English or its equivalent in the local language. Very few maps used both names, the "Sea of Japan" and the "East Sea," either in English or its equivalents in the local language. Even in the maps, with both names the main description was the "Sea of Japan", and the "East Sea" was used in parenthesis or in the form of an additional description. A pamphlet entitled "East Sea in World Maps" (Apr. 2002. published by Society for East Sea in ROK) reported on maps that used only the "East Sea," and on other maps that make the "East Sea" the primary name with the "Sea of Japan" in parenthesis. They did not find such maps in their field study, which mainly investigated maps available for purchase.
Evidently, the "Sea of Japan" is now internationally established as the standard name in the maps used around the world. ROK asserted that the name "East Sea" is beginning to be used on the same level as the "Sea of Japan," but the Japanese civil survey made it clear that this assertion was entirely contrary to the facts. I would like you to correct the name to "Sea of Japan" immediately. I am looking forward to your faithful correspondence for the issue.
As you see the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, the undermentioned fact became clear. (http://www.mofa.go.jp/policy/maritime/japan/sea.html) The Japanese Government conducted a field study on this matter from August to October 2000 in 60 countries in the world, other than the Republic of Korea (ROK), the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Japan. Inquiry members investigated how "Sea of Japan" (the sea area enclosed by northeastern Asia, the Japanese Archipelago and Sakhalin) was described in the maps, using maps that were mostly available for purchase by anyone in those countries.

Hi. This mail is to inform you about a data error I've found in Google Earth. The marine area between the Japanese Archiopelago and the Korean peninsula is named "East Sea" where it's supposed to be "Sea of Japan". I believe that "Sea of Japan" is the most common name used all over the world rather than "East Sea", and as a source, I have attached a link that would explain how common the name "Sea of Japan" is.
The website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. (http://www.mofa.go.jp/policy/maritime/japan/sea.html) The Japanese Government conducted a field study on this matter from August to October 2000 in 60 countries in the world, other than the Republic of Korea (ROK), the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Japan. They did not find such maps in their field study, which mainly investigated maps available for purchase.
As you can see, the name "Sea of Japan" is far more widely used compared to the name "East Sea", and using such name creates nothing but confusion. I hope for a quick correction for this issue. Thank you.

I have been enjoyed your benefitial website. However, I was shocked because you unexpectedly changed the name of the sea of Japan to "East Sea" on the Google Earth. In my opinion, the name "Sea of Japan" is the most commonly used in the world because several Japanese civil investigations of the issue of the sea of Japan on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan trustworthily clarified that ROK's (the Republic of Korea) assertion of this issue was untrustfulness. I would like to know what the bases for your decision to change the name. Also, I will discuss the reasons for the inappropriateness of the name "East Sea" below. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan http://www.mofa.go.jp/policy/maritime/japan/index.html
First, the Republic of Korea misunderstands the history of "Japan Sea." The claim by South Korea stating that the name "Japan Sea" is a "remnant of colonialism" in the early 20th century is completely groundless. Japanese people can not accept to change the internationally established single name "Japan Sea," with its long history by such a claim based on incorrect recognition.
Second, disorderly application of technical resolution brings confusion in worldwide names of oceans and seas. If a claim by Korea that the name "Japan Sea" should be changed to the "East Sea," or at least should be written together with the name "East Sea" ought to be accepted, other self-interested claims of similar kinds must also be accepted. This would go against one of the objectives of the IHO, "the greatest possible uniformity in nautical charts and documents", and accordingly might become a harmful precedent that opens the door of the confusion for worldwide mariners on the names of oceans and seas. In terms of ensuring the navigational safety, the continuity in the names of oceans and seas is important.
At the end, it brings about confusion to change the name which has been used worldwide and has a long history, based on the claim of the single country. There is no reason to change such a name, which has a long history and is used worldwide, by a claim from a single country. Rather, if such a claim will be accepted, it may become a harmful precedent that will introduce worldwide confusion into the naming of the oceans and seas.
Consequently, as stated above, I strongly believe the name "East Sea" is never acceptable. The details about those information are possible to be inspected freely on the website of Japan Coast Guard. Concerning the facts, would you mind explaining why you changed the name of the sea of Japan and what the ground for making a decision to replace the name is? I am looking forward to your faithful correspondence for my questions. Japan Coast Guard (http://www1.kaiho.mlit.go.jp/GIJUTSUKOKUSAI/nihonkai/index_eng.htm)
The activity of a South Korea cyber diplomatic corps “VANK” is malignant. Only the domain name of Sea of Japan is acquired and the activity of Japan is obstructed.

Dear Lonely Planet Staff
I am obtaining profitable information from your Web site. However, the error in writing was found in a Japanese map of your site. I noticed the term of the sea between the Japanese Islands and Eurasia not the Sea of Japan but the Sea of Japan, East Sea, and described in parallel. The term of Sea of Japan is the only international term of this sea. Of course, the Japanese doesn't call this sea East Sea. I guess that this error in writing is a result of your accepting the demand of a cyber diplomatic corps "VANT" of South Korea. I regret this very much.
It insists as "VANT" is East Sea an international term with a correct this sea and not the Sea of Japan, etc. And, "VANT" systematically sends a large amount of spam mail to Web sites all over the world until the other party responds to the correction. "VANT" is insisted on that the name of Sea of Japan is the legacy of Japanese imperialism of the 20th century. However, this is malignant propaganda based on false. (409のつづき) To tell the truth, a true purpose of the movement of "VANT" is the one based on a political intention to Japan in South Korea. It is to make an advantageous standpoint of the owning right issue of Liancourt Rocks(Takeshima island) between Japan and South Korea. Changing the term is not demanded excluding the map of South Korea though South Korea calls East Sea and the Southern sea and Yellow Sea are called a west sea. However, it is insisted that change only the Sea of Japan into East Sea in a map all over the world. The following two Websites that "VANT" made symbolize it most. The content of these two sites is almost the same. What do you think of this? http://www.seaofjapan.com/http://www.takeshima.com/
As for me, expecting for you to retrieve an error and to return it to the Sea of Japan single term doesn't stop. Thank you for your notice. Yours very sincerely.

The Republic of Korea (ROK) uses the Voluntary Agency Network of Korea (VANK) for lobbying.
It was reported that the Hannara party had lobbied in order to award a Nobel prize tothe proffessor Hwang 禹錫 on CBS. In addition, that named the project H2O which is from "Hannara and Hwang" and "No.1". Also, the Hannara party built overseas publicity activities by making a good use of VANK.
Furthermore, VANK, which organized 11,800 netizen, was commended publicly by the Korean president on January 10th because it had made maps and websites in the world put East Sea with Sea of Japan. VANK built in 1999 sent a huge number of protest emails to a worldwide mapper like National Geographic, an Internet portal site like Lycos and the most largest travel magazine Lonely Planet. In consequence, they put "East Sea" with "Sea of Japan."
Recently, when TIME Magazine reported winning the presidential election of Roh Moo-hyun, VANK complained because a journalist had not written "East Sea" on a relevant article. VANK has been unfolding mailing campaign on a large scale. The ROK government explained the reason for the commendation that it had appreciated that VANK had been leading netizens to join projects such as telling people about Korea accurately and Korea's matchmaking campaign voluntarily and widely.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VANK On August 18, 2005, VANK's attempt was successful in removing Sea of Japan in Google Earth, replacing it with East Sea. Furious Japanese hackers attacked VANK's web server by posting l arge volumes of messages containing insults about Korea and VANK's attempts. 1

2 Korea insists on calling the Sea of Japan the "East Sea," but that name is unjustified for three reasons:
1) In March 2004, the United Nations Secretariat confirmed its policy that "Sea of Japan" is the standard geographical term and as such is to be used in official documents of the United Nations;
2) "East Sea" already refers to the East China Sea in China, and to the South China Sea in Vietnam. So the Korean usage causes confusion;
3) according to the investigation of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 82% of old maps say "Sea of Japan," 7% of the old maps say "Sea of Korea," and only one map says "East Sea."

Dear ●● Thank you for contacting us regarding the labelling of the East Sea/Sea of Japan on the Lonely Planet website. While we understand that there is some dispute over the correct name for this body of water, we at Lonely Planet have a duty to assist travellers by providing the most useful information possible. For this reason, we have used the local names when labelling geographical features throughout all of our 400 online destination profiles. In keeping with this policy, the sea in question is labelled 'East Sea (Sea of Japan)' within our Korean profile and 'Sea of Japan (East Sea)' within our Japan content.Thank you again for your comments. Sincerely, Lonely Planet Publications
A Korean-American who lives and works in Seoul said privately: "Koreans are taught by their grandparents, parents and the educational system that the Japanese are evil. Hear this every day since birth and you have a running experiment of a Brave New World."
I would like to discuss Vank's behaviours like agitating the sea of Japan should be renamed to "East Sea." Such claim is utterly groundless, on the contrary, most of Korean's activities such as propagandism that the name of the sea of Japan is wrong, Japan has to revise Japanese history textbooks, and Dokdo (Takeshima ,or Liancourt Rocks) is Korea's territory are obstinate harassment by anti-Japanese sentiment.
The Korean just propagandize such arguments on an uncertain basis in order to have a self-respec t by protesting against Japan. According to several trustworthy reference materials on websites of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Japan Coast Guard, from historical, geographical, safety of navigaion and democratic standpoints, changing the name of the sea of Japan is not acceptable.
Consequently, I strongly believe Korea's, especially VANK's, assertions are unreasonable. In addition, with regard to the Japanese history textbook controversy, it is just interference in the domestic affairs. Of course, Japan's war responsibility is hard to shoulder. However, I am sure, since the end of the World War 2, Japan has never taken any military actions to other countries by Article 9 of the Constitution for 60 years. That should be appreciated and it is unjustified that Japan and the Japanese are looked down on. I am wondering if you feel sympathy for our, the Japanese's, distress.
Moreover, I think that it is not an exaggeration because it says that economic of Japan after World War II development's spreading to east Asia and Southeast Asia, and having contributed to economic in the same region development are historical distinguished services of the world of Japan.
I think the notation of Takeshima (or Dokdo) on a map is unfair.
1. Dokdo was noted in the English version Liancourt Rocks is called Takeshima in Japan, and is called Dokdo in the Republic of Korea (ROK). This name deeply has a relevance to a territorial dispute between Japan and ROK. The territorial rights of the island:
is recognized as Japan's territory by 81% of the Japanese. was offered ROK to bring to the International Court of Justice by the Japanese government in 1954, but ROK denied. was mentioned that the island is a disputed area in The World Factbook published by CIA.
Therefore, I argue Takeshima and Dokdo should be written down on a map together.
2. There is no notation of the island in the Japanese version. The Japanese version of the map ought to be localized for Japanese people. It is irrational to be written the ROK name in the English version, but not to be written the name in a Japanese version even though it is recognized as a territorial issue.

>>513 Are you familiar with the South Korean NGO organization named "VANK"? Although they are officially NGO organizations, they are actually backed up by the South Korean government and they are aimimg to make the world know "the true South Korea". However, their contents of activity forces "the information covenient for South Korea" from beginning to end, and their method is to send large quantities of spam mails which is selfish and violent. Now, it seems like they are using such method to the site which uses the "Sea of Japan" on their maps, to change it to "Tokai" which they demand. There are several sites already which yield to their request by using "Tokai". Although South Korea continues to insist that "Tokai" is the right name based on history, their basis is inaccurate and after being denied, they end up carrying in another basis. Actually, the South Korean goverment has not brought out any counterarguments for the results of the investigation about the old maps done by the Japanese government. As a result, in the map of IHO (International Hydrographic Organization), it was not changed to "Tokai" on the 4th revision done in 2003, and "Sea of Japan" is still used in independent notation even now.

The Obsession
The Korean often insist Japanese cultures are the origin of Korea.
Do you know Japanese martial arts "KENDO"? "Kendo" is like a fencing between "SAMURAI.."
Korean people recently began to insist that "KENDO" had been originated from Korea's "KUMDO." However, this insistence lacks credibility. I hope you refer to the following page. http://www.geocities.jp/bxninjin2004/
Also, it is insisted that "SAMURAI", "JUDO" and "NINJYA" are the cultures of Korea.
The Korean often do strange insistences that seem like having persistences on culture.
Do you know Japanese Martial arts "KENDO"? "KENDO" is a traditional Japanese fencing that was used to play among "SAMURAI." Korean people recently began to claim that "KENDO" had been originated from their "KUMDO." However, this assertion lacks a lot of credibility. I hope you refer to the following page that indicates fictions of Korea's claim. http://www.geocities.jp/bxninjin2004/ Also, they are not satisfied with claiming, they insist that "SAMURAI", "JUDO" and "NINJA" are the culture of South Korea.
In addition, many children in South Korea recognize these Japanese animated cartoons are original products of South Korea because they are taught such fabrication.
Therefore, most of South Korea's assertion that Japanese culture is the origin of South Korea is groundless. Please be very careful of Korea's weird concoctions.

Same Graphics and Typeface as the Real Thing "Within two days after the hurricane hit, they put their content up and sent e-mails to millions of people," explained Dan Hubbard, senior director of Security and Technology Research for Websense, Inc. One such e-mail looks like a legitimate Hurricane Katrina plea from the Red Cross. It contains the standard credit card information form as well as the same graphics, typeface and security logo in the corner as used by the real Red Cross. "So they're making you believe that this is a secured site," said Hubbard, "and that it has been verified when indeed obviously it has not." phony sites have been traced to Korea, China and the United States in the last few days, according to the Red Cross.
The South Korean is demanding the parallel description of Sea of Japan and East Sea from organizations and Web sites all over the world. And, the South Korean is insisting, "The parallel description of Sea of Japan and East Sea has extended to the world so much". However, the parallel description of Sea of Japan and East Sea only began to extend by the South Korean's movement very recently. There should be a precondition "East Sea was erased by Japanese imperialism in the 20th century though Sea of Japan and East Sea were generally used in the global maps until the 19th century" so that the South Korean's insistence was admitted. However, there is no such historical fact. Sea of Japan had already been generalized as an international name in the 19th first half of the century before Japan opened the country to the world. On the other hand, East Sea is hardly used in the global maps until the 19th century. http://www.mofa.go.jp/policy/maritime/japan/index.html Therefore, even if the parallel description of Sea of Japan and East Sea is expanded by the propaganda very based on false by the South Korean recently, it doesn't become a reason why it admits the parallel description of Sea of Japan and East Sea.
Moreover, the South Korean calls East China Sea South Sea, and is calling Yellow Sea West Sea. However, the South Korean doesn't demand the parallel description of East China Sea and South Sea, and not demand the parallel description of Yellow Sea and West Sea. The South Korean is demanding only the parallel description of Sea of Japan and East Sea. A true reason why the South Korean demands the parallel description of Sea of Japan and East Sea is that it is advantageous as for the issue of Liancourt Rocks(Takeshima island) between Japan and South Korea.
Moreover, the South Korean will admit the Southern sea and West Sea are only local names of South Korea as for no demand of the South Korean of the parallel description of East China Sea and South Sea, and no demand of the parallel description of Yellow Sea and the West Sea. And, the South Korean will admit East Sea is a local name of South Korea as well as South Sea and West Sea as for this.
Moreover, China is calling East China Sea East Sea. And, Vietnam is calling South China Sea East Sea. It is very confusing for surrounding countries to call Sea of Japan East Sea. http://oslo.hp.infoseek.co.jp/index.en.html
There is no reason that East Sea is suitable as an international name at all.
South Korea was writing in above all in an official chart of South Korea until the first time of 1990's as Sea of Japan. South Korea had inadvertently written until recently as Sea of Japan. This fact completely contradicts the insistence of South Korea "Sea of Japan is a legacy of Japanese imperialism of the 20th century". http://www1.kaiho.mlit.go.jp/GIJUTSUKOKUSAI/nihonkai/index_eng.htm
On the other hand, South Korea had never raised this issue to the United Nations Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names (UNCSGN) or IHO until the 1990s. Moreover, South Korea had been using the name "Sea of Japan" in their official navigational charts. In other words, there is a historical fact that South Korea had accepted the name "Sea of Japan" for nearly 50 years after it had moved itself out of the influence of Japan in the Second World War. The name "East Sea" first appeared in the nautical charts of South Korea in 1995. This fact completely contradicts the insistence of South Korea "Sea of Japan is a legacy of Japanese imperialism of the 20th century". http://www1.kaiho.mlit.go.jp/GIJUTSUKOKUSAI/nihonkai/index_eng.htm

South Korea historically and traditionally has accepted "Sea of Japan" as the official name of the sea for nearly 50 years, ever since the country declared independence from Japan after WWII.

Interesting enough, the name of "East Sea" first appeared in South Korea's nautical charts in 1995 in cocurrence with increasing nationalism and anti-Japanese sentiment among South Koreans.

Hi. I have heard that your site has accepted the protests made by the organization "VANK", which is actually backed-up by the South Korean government, to change the single notation "Sea of Japan" to the parallel notation with "East Sea" and to change the name of the "Liancourt Rocks (Japanese name Takeshima)" to "Dokdo" as a Korean territory.
I feel very depressed against this. It seems like VANK objected that the "Tokai (East Sea)" is the only notation, but from the links below you should find out how ambiguous their assertions are.
The first one reports about the Korean Congressmen asserting that "Sea of Corea" should be the right name, and the second and the third are the links to a site of the Korean Government that notates "Sea of Korea", which is for the people overseas.
As you can see, the asserted names are not unified at all. Since you have accepted their request, they may come back later on thinking that you are their supporters and request for more, like to change the notation of the region to "Sea of Korea" or "Sea of Corea".
Besides, you may be thinking that the parallel notation is a fair solution.
But I do not think so. To try to be really fair, you should follow the determination of the United Nations where many countries join, and use the single notation "Sea of Japan". It is the same for "Liancourt Rocks (Takeshima)"
This area is included in Shimane Prefecture in Japan under administration now, and is accepted internationally. Moreover, in order to clarify the dominium, a case has been presented to the International Court of Justice.
Also, It is filed in the feedbacks of CIA as a troubled region. It is not likely to state such area to be a Korean territory. Thank you for reading such a long mail. I wish for an immediate correction, and a great success for your company.
In the ancient Korea the teaching of Confucianism was the basis of thinking. But now, the religion in Korea has diversified, and there aren’t as much as people that believe in the thinking of Confucianism as a religion. But the thinking of Chinese thoughts has grown through ages in the basis of social of Korea. Now days, the Chinese thoughts are taking the roots in the behavior in one’s mind in Korean society.
In the thinking of Confucianism, there is a teaching to respect the elder and to follow them. Seemingly, it seems as the same in other countries but, in the teaching of Confucianism, it means absolute power and importance in respecting the elder. Objecting to an elder is out of the question.
In the early Korea, they made China as an elder, and Japan as a young brother, basing the thinking of Confucianism. (This thinking is said to be the Caebis discipline)
The reasons that Korea made Japan as a younger brother are…
1. The Koreans thinks that the Koreans are the older tribes than Japan. And the cultures of Japan were brought through the Korean peninsula.
2. From the thinking of Confucianism, the cultures and the status are better than Japan because Korea is closer to China than Japan.
Korea has done a remarkable development through these days. Korea has done enormous cultural exchanges with other countries. From these points, there are people that isn’t tied down to these two thinking above. But on the other hand, various cultures that begun in Japan is assumed to be born in Korea by the actions of the Korean Medias.
Korea has a certain believe in being "Elder brother" in the basis of consideration culturally dominant is appearance of many things that still exist in this now against the "Younger brother", Japan that exists as an economically in a competing relation.
The dispute of the name of "Sea of Japan" and "Tokai" and the thinking of how Korea thinks about the fact that the name of the country of "Younger brother" is in the name of the sea facing Korea, the fact could be taken inevitable from the fact that there are still people that believes in Confucianism.
Selfish japanese... The sea is locate in the East of not only Korea but also all Europe & Asia continent. It have to be called as East sea naturally. But you Japanese started to call the sea as Sea of Japan impudently since early 20th century. (By illegal infiltration to the many of asian countries..) Korea, China, Russia.. Many countries contact with the sea to eastward. Only Japan contact with the sea to the otherward. Why east sea is called for small one country? It must be called as EAST SEA. Don't call the sea as incorrect name forcibly!!!!! E.A.S.T. S.E.A is really correct name....
Hahahahah.. Very funny.. OK.. I'll agree with you.. Pacific ocean is your East sea.. So. If you can, request google earth and all over the world that 'Pacific ocean' change to 'East sea of Japan' I'll see the world's reaction about it. Hurry up! Goto google earth now!!
if you knew the fact that korea got their freedom from the hiroshima bomb and you are korean, its understandable joke but i have to say that was not apropriate... kcapo // Videos (0) | Favorites (0) | Friends (0) - (34 minutes ago) The Korean is the worst one to joke on the atomic bomb affairs. However, the Japanese are not a good one either, they still not apologize for what they did in WW2. Some of them even claim that they did not kill many people in China. If they feel sad when someone make joke of the atomic bomb, they should understand the feeling of the countries being invaded by Japan during WW2. elvo // Videos (0) | Favorites (0) | Friends (0) - (27 minutes ago)
This is natural. The method of navigating the ocean to modern ages was not developed, and it closed at long time 350 years of the country. What meaning does the name of the ocean have in such a nation?
However, there is movement of changing the name of this Sea of Japan in the Republic of Korea recently.
For instance, the Atlantic Ocean is called "Taiseiyou" in Japan. This is a name only of Japan, and doesn't have the relation to an international name of Atlantic Ocean either.
East Sea is also the same as this. However, this movement is insisted on to substitute East Sea that is the regional name for the Sea of Japan as an international name.
It is insisted that it be called East Sea in this region as they are historical as the grounds. If Japan is excluded, it can be said a correct insistence. However, they have forgotten the thing that Japan exists in the same region, too. A geographic position of the Sea of Japan is not the east of Japan.
The namer of the Sea of Japan was previously written even though the voyager. Can the Sea of Japan seen from voyager's eyes be called East Sea? It is impossible no matter how it thinks. Because the voyager doesn't come from the west of Far Eastern Asia included in a Korean peninsula.
The voyager comes over in the Pacific Ocean. . from the south from the east perhaps. Their courses head for the west or the north. It is not necessary to think whether to call the sea reached at last after navigation East Sea.
Their big mistakes are convinced that the Japanese named the Sea of Japan. The thing whose it is a mistake is clarified in the material that they show as evidence of an own insistence.
As mentioned above, there is no right reason why the international society should change a historical name of Sea of Japan named so that the voyager may show the geographic position as well as other oceans to a regional name in a Korean peninsula.
In countries and the organizations in the intellectual world, it is convinced that there is not accepting the demand by such a political, racial reason.
Do sul do leste talvez.
VANK is a non-government organization in South Korea mostly consisted of Korean teens, and sometimes even of grown-ups. It works on making people around the world realize what Korean history is, and contemporary status as well. It is being kept running by the donation from those who wants to join it.
... It seems to be no problem. However, it is widely said that the government is powering the organization. At this point, we can no longer call it NGO. However, this seems to be a secret. It actually works on influencing their nationality so that people have a perceived kind of view on Korean history and geographic as well as foreign people. It also makes many templates in order that anyone can send e-mail easily claiming Japan is wrong. Whenever they find some website with unacceptable opinion for them, even if its target were FBI, NASA, CIA or something like that, they would get together to kill the website by all means. The news mentioned underneath will explain how extreme it would sometimes be. You will find it strange that the Korean themselves issue such a news.
I have a word for the controversy over the name of "Sea of Japan".
My statement is this: It is imperative that the name remain as it is.
Suppose there were no Japan on this planet, the sea zone now officially called "Sea of Japan" would be a part of "Pacific Ocean" and would not have had any specific name.
Moreover, suppose the Japanese demanded that the name of "Pacific Ocean" is illogical and that it be "East Sea". Would that be a sound claim?
South Korea, or as called Korea Republic, has insisted that the area currently named 'Sea of Japan' should officially renamed as the name ignores the right of the country. To achieve the objective, a NGO called VANK has been taking several actions on the Internet. The group's actions are only based on the Korean side's ideas, which all are never ever based on clear and official evidences. We, as Japanese citizens, are waiting for a official and internationally approved decision that will be made once South Korea comes into the international court (in this case, WTO will come to help the both parties to dispute the international problem). We are really disappointed since the Korean side only open the discussion on the Internet and never comes to the court. Given the political and economic importance of the problem, it is obviously wise that the two parties in concerns come to and discuss it in the international court as the WTO rules set out.

What do I get?? I can have some fun sex with Europen, and American guys… what I love – they are very sexy and yummy! Japanese men are pigs. Also, I want to practise my English with you, please. Hello my name is Keiko and I live in Tokyo in Japan. I have a nice apartment in Ochanomizu and you are welcome to stay with me if you are UNDER 35 and YOU ARE NICE LOOKING and YOU ARE WHITE. You can save your hotel cost (a lot in Tokyo!) and we can have fun! – but ONLY if you are a white guy. I do not want asian men, sorry.
What do you get? You can stay at my apartment – very nice - it will be living at home for you, only I may be your girlfriend. hehe. I have a nice bed what is very comfortable – and I also have TV (cable ) you can watch English language TV.

The manager told me to don't post my opinion about it because we talks ended up without any progress being made toward a settlement. So, I have stopped posting my opinion since then. However, users who seems South Korean are still posting their argument on Google Earth.
Liancourt Rocks is called Takeshima in Japan, and is called Dokdo in the South Korea (Republic of Korea). It is unfair that the manager pardon South Korean's opinion only, even though it is recognized as a territorial issue. I would like managers to delete all the opinion, and forbid to post about Liancourt Rocks.
I was said in this way before by manager. "Because this place is the place where an intense argument was performed, please do not write in it." I do not write in this place since it. However, users who seemed to be Korean one wrote it in a place in question after manager deleted it. I who thought that this situation was unfair decided a note.
Manager has told me "Never post about the issue." So I have obeyed the instruction since then. However, a Korean posted about the issue after manager deleted. I decided to leave note because it is not fair.
The Japanese government insist the island belongs to Japan. Korea has claimed the island was taken by Japan during colonial rule which is not true.
I read a news from South Korea the other day, reporting that your company has accepted the claim from Korea to notate East Sea together with Sea of Japan. However, such claim is one-sided and there is no justification for it in any way. Therefore, the notation is a mistake and I would like to ask for a correction.
International Hydrographic Organization(IHO) is still using "Limits of Oceans and Seas(3rd Edition)" after meeting of IHO(2007). "Sea of Japan" is monotype in "Limits of Oceans and Seas(3rd Edition)".
First, in China, the East China Sea is referred to as "East Sea". The name "Dong Hai" has already been registered as "East China Sea" in the Limits of Oceans and Seas published by IHO. The name "Tokai" is considered to be the abbreviated form of Tokaido, an ancient province of Japan. The word "East Sea" indicates the other side of the Sea of Japan. That is one of the reasons that the Japanese strongly oppose the name "East Sea". A lot of people will get confused if both sides of the nation are called the same name.
Second, The name "East Sea" does not indicate single place. "East Sea" is used in the world. ( http://oslo.hp.infoseek.co.jp/eastsea.png ) For example, the name "East Sea" is used not only in East Asia, but in Europe as well. If "East Sea" becomes official, in every country, people can translate it only into "East Sea" in each language. Therefore, it is obvious that if the name "East Sea" become official, name conflicts will occur in a lot of languages.
Additionally, the South Korea government presents the notation of 'East sea/Sea of Japan' as an evidence that their claim is accepted. While the United Nations is recommending the single notation of 'Sea of Japan' until the issue is solved, your notation of 'East sea/Sea of Japan' cannot be just the service for South Korean subscribers or neutral position, but is regarded as synonymous with the assertion that you've accepted South Korean's claim for the issue of the name of the sea.
I apologize my poor English. Thank you for reading my mail.
