Scholte conservatively estimates that 3 million North Koreans have died because of famine and 500,000 to 1 million have been murdered in the country's prison camps.
This is not fair. I believe the reason why all the other students (who are largely Caucasion) voted to learn about Japan was because of the movie "The Last Samurai"
No, in many ways it was. They still to this day cannot admit that their kings are of korean origin, they abducted the best best artisans and craftsmen to work and promote their culture. The heart of japanese culture is authentically ancient korea. I know korean and japanese culture, I have both in my family from several generations.

I hope they never do it in Japan again though, the Japanese were completely freaked out about hooligans and looked at every white male as though they might attack them... The Japanese tv kept showing images of the Falkland war as the reason why there was so much animosity between England and Argentina (they flew in 20,000 policemen from all over Japan to Sapporo for that game!), showing what happened in the the Heyzel stadium in Brussels (in the eighties some supporters got killed during a Juventus-Liverpool (?) game) etc. It was terrible! They even chartered a freight ship to use as temporary prison for all the hooligans, etc, etc. They were really going crazy! In the end they only arrested a few young Japanese who had been launching fireworks from the roof of a public toilet.
I was a mechanic at a Hyundai dealer from 93-95 and at a Kia dealer from 99-01 (they were both secondary car lines) and believe me when I tell you the Korean cars are pieces of @#$% you would not believe the problems we encountered like for example in the early 90's Hyundai had a run of Elantra engines in which the timing belts were glued together with glue that was water soluable (sp). One car we put 2 engines and rebuilt the transmission 4 times in less than 30K miles (and not due to mechanic error). In the 2000's we had Kias commong from the factory with the bodies assembled with no seam sealer in the rear half of thre car. These are just some of the things I encountered, I know every car line has it's quirks but I've worked at a Nissan dealer for the last 9 years and have never encountered the same lack of quality. One thing I will give to Kia and Hyundai is that their factory support for their dealers is outstanding. That's enough of me ranting, I would never buy a korean car. http://63.99.108.76/ubb/Forum8/HTML/011042.html

On an interesting note, and one which makes clear that Japan isn't the only country with nationalist nutjobs, we have at least one civic group in Korea that has said it would go to Tsushima Island (off Pusan) and hold a demonstration claiming that the island is Korean territory.
Fucking market's in the goddamn tank again, I'm pissed off, and you ask me what the fuck the wacky Japs'll come up with next? Well, fuck. I don't know. How the hell am I supposed to know what the FUCK THE WACKY JAPS'LL COME UP WITH NEXT?
The records that Daemado("Tsusima" called in Japan) was ruled by Korea during the period, from Corea to Chosun, exist. The year, 1949 Lee Seung Man, Korean president, required Japan to return Daemado. But the requirement was buried in oblivion because of outbreak of Korean War 1950 Japan invaded Korea and it didn't return the land that it had stolen. Japanese is attempting the Dokdo ("TAKESHIMA" called in Japan) keeping greed of invasion

Not to condone, or redirect attention from, the horrible crimes committed in Iraq by the US military, seemingly authorized by Bush and others; but Japan is also under fire for using rubber gags to to silence prisoners within Japan. Recently, one prisoner died as a result of this practice. Unethical treatment of prisoners is not limited to the US.
Koreans hate the Japanese but now with Japanese culture flooding Korea, a lot of Korea's attention is focused on Japan. Some find the Japanese culture mysterious, some find it amusing, some find it as a joke but compassion is there.
But then again its hard to conclude because most of the attention Japan soaks up from Korea are from Korean school girls and we all know how they are like.
As with Japan, I've lived there for a year and a half, and they are quite racist to be blunt. Actually, Korea talks about Japan all the time and Japan could care less about Korea.
But then again - there are more Koreans in the Japanese entertainment business then there are Japanese in Korea. I'm sure that there are about equal interest from both sides.

There is very little open racisim in Japan and a fair bit in Korea. In Japan, they are better at hiding it, because you are paid less than half a Japanese national is paid to do the same job. In Korea, you are paid quite a bit more than a Korean doing the same job but have to put up with the occasional snide remark. This is less pronounced for me as I am a Canadian, not an American.
2) Management Relations.
I always found Korean managers quite flexible once you learn how to deal with them. My teaching ideas were put into better use in Korea than in Japan. In Japan, I always got the "We are Japanese, we know how to teach English to Japanese," even though they were hardly out of the Dick and Jane phase.
Korean students win hands down. Most are genuinely interested in improving their English. They are respectful and easy to teach. In Japan, most of my "students" wanted to be entertained by a gaijin which is what I did in Fukuoka. I spent a year playing silly games and acting like a clown.
There is no doubt that Japan is superior in this respect. People are almost always extremely kind, even if they hate you. Japan is a first class country in most respects [not banks, of course!]. I was always surrounded by a gaggle of cute groupies wanting to do things. On the other hand, they all made more money than I did and I couldn't afford to go out much. In Korea, I could go out on Friday night, have a good dinner and fill my belly with beer for under W30,000 and take a taxi home for W3,000 or so. Try that in Japan and see how fast Y20,000 flies out of your pocket.
Japanese cities are usually very clean, unlike Korean cities, with the notable exception of Seoul. The water is drinkable and eveything works perfectly. On the other hand, Japan can be extremely dull and boring as every town looks exactly the same as the next and the people are usually reserved, shy and quiet.
At present, Japan is saturated and Korea is screaming for teachers. I honestly think that if you look carefully and avoid head hunters you can land a good deal in Korea. Most of the really shady hagwans are gone now. They will even pay your ticket there and give a relocation bonus. Try to be in Seoul, you are closer to the immigration ministry. There is still a chance of getting ripped off, but a friend of mine recently got shafted twice in Japan. You can get W2.0m in Korea and you can save half of it. Try to save Y100,000 per month in Japan. Good luck!
>>455 ,most of my "students" wanted to be entertained by a gaijin which is what I did in Fukuoka.I spent a year playing silly games and acting like a clown.
>>454 posted an article last summer and things have changed quite a bit since then. As you probably know, Japan is over run with people leaving Korea. It is having the effect the effect of driving wages down and hours up. I did go back in November, but the only job I could get was at a school called English Plus in Kofu, Yamanashi, 90 min from Tokyo. I would have stayed another year in Fukuoka, but my father was on his deathbed and they wouldn't give me a month off. Anyway, EP had to hit the scumbag peak, worse than Korea! I was teaching 35+ hours per week and they would do anything that they could to try to screw you out of overtime pay. A typical day: Drive one hour to company, teach two three hour classes back to back, no break, drive to the main school, another hour and teach another hour. Notice there was no meal break and I was not paid for the driving time. They had real problems with staff, they had lost six of their nine teachers in the three months before I got there. They had a Canadian Joe Boy manager relaying the diktats from the Japanese managers verbatum, taking a big Y20,000 for the honour. They advertise a lot in the Japan Times and should be avoided. Luckily, I only signed for six months. ....................................................................................................................................... This guy got a bad deal this time then everything looked bad. Looser.
The third country is another Asian nation, but the police agency has not revealed the name of the country, giving consideration to international relations. The hacker hacked into the computers of the U.S Air Force Space Command via two Korean private firms located in Inchon and Daegu. The hacker used Korean computers by remote control in the third country to penetrate into the U.S computers. The hacking was possible because Korea’s Internet network is the most highly developed in the world and has a close connection with the U.S., and Korean companies’ computer networks are poorly managed due to firms' low security awareness.

I'm guessing the designs for Korean swords were introduced from Korea to Japan when Paekche influence on Japanese culture was at its peak with Korean craftsmen going over there to teach blacksmiths in Osaka and then their knowledge spreading from there on in Japan.
Maybe someone with more knowledge on the Paekche influence can get into it in more detail. that would be cool.

In introduction 1, I pointed out that the persons who insist Japan should apologize to Korea for Japan's colonial rule at first, said the following matters as the basis of argument. 1. The colonial rule of Japan are most severe n the world. 2. Nothing was good in Japanese colonial rule. 3. Even if Japan contributed to Korean development, "we did not ask for".
Therefore I divide the first point into two "the Japanese rule was so severe" and "Japanese failure" and show my conclusion adding international comparison.
About this problem, I am disgusted, how Korean history society distorts facts and Japanese society follows it. This origin cause is that they think correct about the Cairo declaration which was only wartime propaganda. I am surprised how "anti-Japan propaganda in America / China in the time of 3 .1 independence exercise" which became the cause of this Cairo declaration, influenced on today.
At first point of distortion of the history, they do not have recognition about the miserable Korean reality before merger. Without this reflection, they cannot prevent second destroying a country . A purpose to learn the history is to learn from the history, and does not repeat past failure. I think that it is important to tell a right history without concealing a terrible sight of those days.
The second point is distortion of a history fact. It was said that Japan plundered of 40% of farmland by land investigation unfairly, but actually it was only 3%. In addition, they multiply the number of victim by 3 .1 independence exercise on the basis of simple rumor. It's numerical value is more than 10 times of governor-general's office announcement. Even if statistics of a governor-general's office are not trust, they should write two opposing arguments at least. In addition, they should not describe unfair expression such as problem of emigrant .They describe the causes of an emigrant of temporary was that of all periods.
They insist that the system of changing the name was like Japanese compulsion . However, it is natural to think that it was compulsion by mind controlled Korean district bureaucrats, in a great chorus of unification to Japanese. This point is only my guess, but I believe it. The reason is the national traits that do not forgive dissenting opinion seen by today's history textbook problem.
The third point is denial of Japanese contribution at all, especially in the later half of 1930's. If there was not Japanese contribution, there was not the today's Korean development. The best evidence is stagnation of the I Sungman times. The growth of economy stopped since the Japanese rule was over.
Then why will such a distortion have been forgiven? One is by reasons of Korean side. Exile of a pro-Japanese group was done severe after the war in Korea. Therefore it was dangerous to evaluate Japan justly, after exile of a pro-Japanese group, too.
It was against national interest, to evaluate the Japanese rule justly for compensation request to Japan, so it was not able to permit. Korean mass communication is fanatic as you can see about a textbook problem, so the opinion against intention of mass communication is not permitted.
It is natural that the children who grew up by such a history education become an anti-Japan. They do not learn that they distort the history themselves and make noise that it is distortion of the history when Japanese insist on the right history.
... sitting beside a pool in Thailand listening to the Japanese tourists talk about the "gaijin" (including me) in Japanese. Waited an hour or so til I started talking in Japanese to them, subtly letting them know I understood every word they had been saying. Extreme embarrassment.
... watching a Noh 能 play outside at night on blankets next to the river. The people beside us started talking about "gaijin" when they saw us. The conversation turned to their next door neighbors, who happened to be my Japanese wife's parents. They started talking about my wife and me without knowing I was sitting there listening. Full of terrible, racist comments about me and equally horrific comments about my wife's character.
I waited til the play was over and then, in very polite Japanese, wished them a nice journey back to the specific small town they were from, even mentioning local sites I'd only know if I were from there. They almost died from embarrassment.
... sitting eating supper with my wife's parents while they comment about the absurdity of "gaijin" and their customs, while they forget I'm one and sitting right there.
Essence of Japan?.. you mean when you go into a video shop and see all the rapist sado masochistic dodgy Japanese porn on full dispaly on the shelves and then on the other hand hearing how Gajin are responsible for the decline in morals , bad influence, crime etc etc...
I agree 100%. I've had several students express stunned disbelief when I tell them that England too has four seasons and it's not just a Japanese thing and indeed all the temperate countries in the world have 4 seasons.
Interesting thread. I can't think of just a single thing that defines for me the essence of Japan but I'll try. Going to a conveniece store at 2am Saturday night/Sunday morning to get more booze feeling pretty buzzed and seeing rows of young Japanese guys reading comics from the shelves.
ANother thing that really captures Japan for me is the acceptance of things in harmony that we would regard as things that clash in the west. Examples:
a Japanese pub (izakaya) playing classical music a Chinese restaurant playing the Beatles ritz crackers with cream and strawberries on them Sakura mochi - rice with red sweet beans in it wrapped in a salty cherry tree leaf beautiful temples next to concrete monolith apartment blocks
The Japanese seem to have this incredible ability to accept these styles as being complementary where we would find them conflicting.

Human rights activists say that 50 to 100 people were executed in the wake of the Tiananmen Square crackdown some for crimes as simple as burning a police motorcycle or, in one case, taking a photograph of the tanks in the square. But activists question the accuracy of a reporter they say did not visit China and relied on telephone calls to supposed friends of the man. The number of victims is a hotly disputed topic, with estimates ranging form a few thousand to over 300,000. Also in dispute is the extent to which the Nanjing Massace was the result of random acts of lawlessness by Japanese soldiers running amok on a large scale or whether it was in whole or in part the result of policy decisions by the Japanese commanders in China and carried out by the soldiers in and around Nanjing. . In Japan during the immediate postwar years, the U.S. occupation forces imposed censorship in ways that discouraged deep and systematic examination of the Pacific War. . . . Chang's book is also full of errors and exaggerations. Many of these errors were the apparent result of sloppiness and do not--or should not--damn the book as a whole. Others, such as Chang's uncritical use of extremely high figures when quantifying the number of victims, are more serious. One reason is that the question of numbers is perhaps the greatest point of dispute among Japanese historians, and Chang's careless use of high numbers played into the hands of those Japanese out to discredit her project. My own view is that the total numbers are not so important--if only 100,000 Chinese were slaughtered instead of 250,000 is the massacre any less of an atrocity? Still, anyone writing a book in this subject is obliged to address the question of numbers in a rigorous way. The many errors and exaggerations in Chang's book are terribly unfortunate because they provide good leverage for those who seek to undermine her whole argument. http://www3.la.psu.edu/textbooks/MJ/war_views.htm
http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/opinion/200211/kt2002112117242311340.htm Thus, comfort women were unknown to the 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty with Japan, and unknown to the 1965 Basic Treaty between South Korea and Japan. Eager to receive paltry sums of some $300 million in grants and $200 million from Japan, the South Korean government then headed by a former Imperial Japanese Army officer, Park Chung-hee, could not be bothered with comfort women issues, as pointed out in Bonnie Bongwan Oh's and Margaret Setz's ``Legacies of the Comfort Women of World War II''. President Park's regime was then fiercely focused on rapid economic growth at any cost. The Japanese government has generally taken the stance that all pending problems between Korea and Japan, including those of reparations, were resolved by the 1965 treaty. Since Japan became a principal ally of the United States in the Cold War, issues that were uncomfortable to Japan were swept under the rug.

As we all know that a country's embassy is the continue of domain,so attacked into our embassy in japan is not a matter of bad news or accident but a matter of violence of terrorist.so why Chinese people burnt the flag of Japan is just to express our emotion. and you also recommend me that your councilman said "it's the begining of the war in the past" when our soldiers prevented North Korean crushed into japanese embassy in China several years ago ,so what do you think of the meaning of this words?
Our Chinese people love peace and we really do not want to the war to destroy the prosperity of our country, but we do not afraid of war, many of my friends told me that if it's necessary they will contribute all of their wealth to our government to prevent the independence of taiwan, anyway all of us want to be the first fall down soldiers to maintain the wholeness and dignity of our country. The people of our country are united behind our men and women in uniform, and this government will do all that is necessary to assure the success of their historic mission. and this mission has no business with if you may acceptable or not just because it's our civil affair and mostly taiwanese have the same idea. yup, i dislike some of the japanese. in my eyes, japan is a irresponsible country,it's hurt so many fellow Asian countries in world war two and even now, but unfortunately ,none of them heard japan say sorry about this, under the supports of the us, it becomes more and more aggressive, and many of it's people's action makes our love peace countries so tired. And i'm sure it will pay cost for it's action. And it reported that the two men who were abducted in Iraq imitating Chinese to escape the abduction,so funny!isn't it? Did you think of it? why they want to imitate Chinese?

A10) Well There are actually more than one gap, Japan tends to have high pride and are stubborn in ways. Even when they enslaved Korea or China, They hid it from the text book like it never happened, They also deny the WW2lost and keep that topic away from education. I personally think they should go back and learn from their past and rid tradition that would isolate Japan from other Countries. Hopefully then, there will be less Asses in Japan,....well pretty much all countries has this problem though.

4chan originally started as a subproject to entertain all the nerds in ADTRW as an English version of 2chan. The original site eventually got out to the rest of the internet, and that is when the trouble began.
Japanese flooders used up monthly bandwidth in days, assholes and morally righteous idiots came to troll in droves, GoDaddy axed the .net domain while PayPal cancelled the donation account, and most notably, our own apathy, all contributed to the long demise of 4chan.
4chan started dying, in all senses, one week after the domain was registered. People came out to help, but never enough (C_V, the moderators , thatdog (maintainer of the English Futabally), countless donations) to make the site seem more than a giant money sucking tumor. The most recent flooding just assured us that 4chan was past its prime in terms of entertainment value. I would personally like to thank the rest of the internet for completely sucking at everything that is not distributing pornography or hilarious email chain letters. You people should be ashamed of yourself.
