With the terrestrial TV premiere of episode one, The Fellowship of the Ring,
I suppose it’s official; cinematically, the much-lauded, much-hyped trilogy
The Lord of the Rings is now yesterday’s news, though assured of its place in movie
history.That being so, this is probably as good a time as any to wonder who benefited
most from the overall phenomenon?Undoubtedly New Line, the company that backed it, and
anyone else who happened to grab a share of the gross box-office take must be getting the
red carpet treatment at their neighbourhood banks.But how much of the success rubbed off
on the people who actually made the films? Curiously enough, very little. The trilogy
established the career of Orlando Bloom (Legolas), made an unexpected cult figure out of
Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and turned the co-writer and director, Peter Jackson, into a megastar.
And basically, that’s it. But what about Frodo, Elijah Wood, who not only carried the ring
but carried the entire story? The Lord of the Rings has certainly made him very well-known but
it hasn’t made him a star.

True, he has landed lead roles in two forthcoming independent pictures ？
Hooligans, a story of British football violence, and Everything is Illuminated,
a postwar, post-Holocaust drama. But in a bigger-budget movie, the thriller Sin City,
he plays a supporting role, as he did in one of last year’s most original films,
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and before that in SpyKids 3: Game Over.
The problem perhaps, the reason why greater opportunities haven’t come his way,
is that he is only 24 and looks even younger, which makes him difficult to cast in
anything but youthful roles. Maybe he’ll just have to be patient but as a former
child actor, he’s surely used to that. He was not, luckily for him,
a child star ？ look what happened to his contemporary, Macaulay Culkin,
with whom Wood appeared in The Good Son and whose movie career virtually ended
with puberty.Wood did play the lead in The Adventures of Huck Finn and The War
but mostly he built his reputation in films starring other people ？ the likes
of Internal Affairs, Radio Flyer, Flipper, The Ice Storm and the otherwise laughable
Deep Impact. In all these, especially as the troubled son in The Ice Storm,
he won critical and popular acclaim as an accomplished character actor.

Alan Ladd was no taller, and neither are Dustin Hoffman and Al Pacino. It’s the baby
face that’s holding him back.
He has already lost several tasty roles, he says, because he looks too young,
“But hopefully that will change as I get older,” he says philosophically,
meanwhile perhaps staring anxiously into the mirror and, unlike the rest of us,
urging wrinkles to appear. To date, The Lord of the Rings is the biggest thing
that has ever happened to him. He knows that and maybe it will always remain so.
But with maturity and a bit of luck he could well have other achievements to rank
alongside it.

高さ４０センチほどのオリファントのフィギュアがありました
勿論あれと同サイズのものがもらえるなどと思っていたわけではないけれど･･･
ちょっと複雑な思い・・・・でも死んでもオクには出さないぞ！！！
