DVD-RAM - a dead duck?
As each day passes, the prospects of DVD-RAM becoming a home video recording format look less
and less likely. The format, which uses recordable discs held inside a protective caddy, is supported by
Panasonic, Hitachi, Toshiba and Samsung. Well, at least Samsung used to be one if its supporters,
because the company now says it has scrapped plans to launch DVD-RAM in the UK. Instead, next year,
it will launch a combi-recorder that uses Pioneer's DVD-RW and Sony/Philips' DVD+RW formats.
The reason is that these formats offer some degree of backwards compatibility with today's
DVD-Video players, but RAM doesn't.
