Report: CIA Director Initially Backed Truth Commission
CIA Director Leon Panetta has revealed he initially supported the creation of
a Truth Commission to investigate the Bush administration’s counterterrorism policies.
Panetta told The New Yorker magazine, quote,
"I could see that it would make some sense, frankly, to appoint a high-level commission, with
somebody like Sandra Day O’Connor, Lee Hamilton - people like that."
Panetta dropped his support for the Truth Commission after President Obama essentially vetoed
the idea in late April.
