この単縦陣の欠点を解決したのが、冒頭の複縦陣。
A fleet formed in several short columns could change its heading faster than
one formed in a single long column. Since most command signals were made
with flags or shuttered searchlights between ships, the flagship was usually
placed at the head of the centre column so that its signals might be more easily
seen by the many ships of the formation.
「いくつかの小隊から構成された複縦陣の艦隊は、長大な単縦陣と比べると、
迅速に方向変換をすることが可能だった。また艦同士で旗旒信号や発光信号
を用いた命令伝達を、最も多くやりとりすることが出来た。
通常旗艦は複縦陣の中央列先頭に位置し、そこからの信号は比較的容易に
多くの艦から確認することを可能にした」
